I've been fly fishing for about 26
years, tying flies for about 24.
My first tentative attempts with flies were on the
Mahood and Stellako Rivers in BC. The first time a 16"
plus fish came up from about 10' deep and smacked a
Yellow Humpy, I was hooked solid.
Started tying flies and really learning in the early
'80's fishing mainly The Bow, Highwood and Crowsnest
Rivers in Alberta, with the odd trip to the Stellako....ah
those first couple hundred yards of the Stellako below
the lake can be awesome.
Used to fish the Bow 40-60 days/evenings a year most of
the '80's, and managed to fish it all 12 months of the
year. Gotta watch out for those icebergs in the winter
months.
I've caught over 30 species so far on flies, mainly in
Alberta, BC, Montana, Mexico, and the Bahamas.
Favorite rivers: I try to make a circuit every
summer....the blue ribbon portion of the Missouri around
Craig, Montana, more big (over 16") Rainbows and Browns
per mile than anywhere I've been, a day on the Madison,
then the Crowsnest, the Elk River and it's tribs, and
Michelle Creek and it's tribs, some of which will remain
nameless...BIG Cutts, HUGE Bull Trout, tiny streams, and
every couple of years a day or two floating the Bow for
old times sake...strong fish.
Moved to BC in 1988 and by gum if I didn't get a Dolly
Varden on my first cast from the side of the road on the
Squamish River in December. Then discovered the sea run
cutts on the Harrison and the Stave, as well as the
salmon in season. Then started on the lakes in the
Kamloops/Merritt area.
Now living in Chemainus on the Island, fish the Cowichan,
the salt chuck, the local lakes...and last year
discovered beach fishing for pinks and coho...closest
thing we've got to bonefishing in Canada.
Doing more and more salt water fly fishing out this way
and Port Renfrew and Nootka Sound areas... all the
salmon species plus "black bass", ling cod, various rock
fish, kelp greenling etc.
